Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain has offered a compelling look into her chilling performance as the 'Other Mommy' in the highly anticipated horror film of the same name. She detailed an unsettling creative process, including a unique facial expression so effective it reportedly caused a child on set to scream in fear. The movie, based on Josh Malerman’s acclaimed novel, delves into the psychological terror faced by a young girl named Bela when a malevolent entity, eerily resembling her mother, invades her home.

Crafting a Sinister Reflection

Chastain, taking on the dual roles of Bela’s biological mother and the mysterious doppelgänger, immersed herself in understanding the entity's disturbing reality during her preparation. She contemplated the inherent 'pain' such a creature might endure while attempting to perfectly mimic a warm, human form it doesn't truly possess. “In prep, I started thinking about the reality of Other Mommy,” Chastain explained, envisioning the internal struggle required for the entity to project tenderness and gentleness to young Bela despite its true nature.

The actress further elaborated that every physical choice for the character stemmed from the idea of the entity striving to embody everything Bela yearned for in her own mother. This central concept underpins the film's profound psychological horror, intentionally blurring the lines between a purely supernatural threat and the painfully familiar fear of a parent being subtly replaced or altered.

The Face That Terrified

A pivotal element of Chastain's portrayal is an unnerving facial expression she meticulously developed to capture this internal contradiction. She recounted discovering an "unblinking smile" while practicing in the mirror, which, when combined with flowing tears, produced a stark and profoundly unsettling contrast. This eerie fusion of apparent warmth and underlying distress proved instantly impactful. Chastain recounted an incident where a child entered her trailer, and upon witnessing the face, “he immediately screamed.” Director Rob Savage reportedly affirmed the chilling effect, telling her directly, “That is Other Mommy.”

Chastain also shed light on what she believes makes the character and the film so profoundly unsettling for audiences. “What makes Other Mommy so terrifying is the idea of a parent being replaced by something sinister,” she shared. She added that a core element of the narrative is the ambiguous question of whether young Bela is truly encountering a malevolent entity or merely a darker, unrecognizable side of her own mother, a distinction the child desperately struggles to make sense of.
