The Bridgerton universe is set to expand once more, with author Julia Quinn and Netflix officially confirming a new limited series exploring the early life and romance of Lady Violet Bridgerton and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. This highly anticipated prequel will delve into the origins of the Bridgerton family matriarch's own love story, years before her children captivated audiences with their romantic pursuits.

A Glimpse into Violet's Past

The untitled prequel project will trace Violet’s formative years and her burgeoning relationship with Edmund Bridgerton, the man who would become her husband, long before she took on the role of the beloved Bridgerton matriarch. The announcement was shared recently by both Quinn and the streaming platform Netflix via social media.

In a message penned in the distinctive voice of Lady Whistledown, Julia Quinn shared the exciting news with fans. "Dearest Gentle Reader, this author writes to you with most exciting news… The love match that started it all shall soon be yours to see, dear reader," Quinn wrote, confirming that a new series chronicling the romance of a young Violet and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton is actively underway.

This upcoming limited series marks the second spin-off from the main Bridgerton saga, following the success of Queen Charlotte, which explored the youthful romance between Queen Charlotte and King George. While Lady Violet has played a significant role in the original series, guiding her children through their own romantic endeavors, her personal history has primarily remained a backdrop. This new show promises to bring her past to the forefront, revealing a side of her previously only hinted at.

Creative Team and Casting Details

The production will once again feature Shonda Rhimes at the helm as producer. Rhimes will also serve as co-showrunner and co-writer alongside Nicholas Nardini. Tom Verica, who previously directed and executive produced for Queen Charlotte, is set to direct and executive produce this new series, collaborating with Rhimes and Betsy Beers.

As of now, official casting details for the younger versions of Violet and Edmund have not been revealed. In the main Bridgerton series, Ruth Gemmell portrays the adult Lady Violet, while Connie Jenkins-Greig took on the role of a younger Violet in the Queen Charlotte spin-off.

The Expanding Bridgerton Saga

While development on this Violet Bridgerton prequel is in progress, the primary Bridgerton series is also moving forward with its main storyline. Season 5 is expected to center on Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling, roles portrayed by Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza, respectively. Furthermore, the flagship series has already received a renewal, securing its future through Season 6.
