Unraveling the Story of Mayil and Devayani
The narrative of Hi centers on Mayilsaami, affectionately known as Mayil, a reserved young man who departs his village for Chennai following a rejection from his childhood sweetheart. In the bustling city, he crosses paths with Devayani, a woman seeking refuge from an unhappy arranged marriage and a challenging home life. As their connection deepens, Mayil finds himself falling in love with her.
When their respective families discover their whereabouts and attempt to bring them back, Mayil concocts a lie, claiming Devayani is pregnant with his child. To further his elaborate deception and secure Devayani's cooperation, he invents a fictional Pakistani girlfriend. Believing Mayil's tale, their families proceed with arranging their marriage, leading Devayani to move in with Mayil's family. As they spend more time together, Mayil grapples with his genuine feelings amidst the complex web of falsehoods he has woven. The truth about the fabricated pregnancy eventually surfaces, causing considerable distress to both families. Still unable to confess his true emotions, Mayil maintains his facade, asserting that his imaginary lover rejected him, and creates distance from Devayani.
A turning point arrives when Devayani is reunited with her long-lost mother, Usha, discovering that Usha's absence was a self-sacrificing act to protect her family. Devayani also learns that Mayil played a crucial role in locating her mother. Realizing that Mayil's "Pakistani girlfriend" was a complete fabrication and that she was the one he truly loved, Devayani finally acknowledges her own feelings. Upon returning to Chennai, she openly declares her love for Mayil, leading to their reconciliation as they overcome their personal fears and past misunderstandings.
