Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj has expressed a strong desire for the upcoming sequel, Mahaan 2, starring Chiyaan Vikram and Dhruv Vikram, to receive a grand theatrical release. This ambition marks a significant shift from its predecessor, Mahaan, which premiered directly on an over-the-top (OTT) platform in 2022.

A Theatrical Dream for the Sequel

Subbaraj recently shared his vision for Mahaan 2, highlighting his initial disappointment regarding the first film's digital-only debut. "We wanted Mahaan as a theatrical release; we imagined the interval block of Dhruv's entry on big screens, and its response. But unfortunately it went to OTT," he stated during a recent interaction with Behindwoods. This unfulfilled wish fuels his current plans for the sequel.

"That's why I want to take Mahaan 2 in theatres; it's a big dream for me," he added, emphasizing his commitment to bringing the father-son duo's next chapter to the big screen.

Subbaraj's Immediate Projects

Despite his aspirations for Mahaan 2's theatrical run, Subbaraj's next directorial venture will be a direct-to-OTT film. This upcoming project, featuring Atharvaa, Upendra, and Prabhudeva, is based on the novel Puli Attam and promises an "immense visual experience." He conveyed his comfort with this arrangement, noting, "I'm not worried, as right from the start it's a Netflix film." This indicates a clear distinction in release strategies for his different projects.

Background on Mahaan

The original Mahaan, an action thriller, premiered on Prime Video on February 10, 2022. The narrative centers on Gandhi Mahaan, a mild-mannered commerce teacher living a Gandhian lifestyle with his wife, Nachi, and son, Dada. His life takes an unexpected turn when, during his family's absence, he indulges in forbidden activities, leading to Nachi abandoning him. Freed from his constraints, Gandhi rises to power in the liquor business alongside a local baron.

Years later, his son Dada returns as an idealistic officer, staunchly adhering to Gandhian principles, setting up an intense ideological conflict with his father. The film also featured Simran, Bobby Simha, Sananth, Vettai Muthukumar, and Deepak Paramesh in significant roles.

The Road Ahead for Mahaan 2

Director Karthik Subbaraj had previously confirmed the development of a sequel. While a release date is yet to be announced, Mahaan 2 is reportedly anticipated to commence production by 2028. This long-term plan allows Subbaraj to pursue other projects while nurturing his vision for the theatrical return of the Vikram-Dhruv Vikram saga.
